The success of a Yoga teacher cannot be decided based on their knowledge of the philosophy of Yoga and the skills they have in performing various asanas. It requires much more. Success as a Teacher of Yoga also requires having the knowledge of how to provide instruction and the confidence to do so. This is one reason the Practicum is an important aspect of the Yoga Teacher Training program.

Vinyasa Yoga Academy has incorporated the Teaching Practicum in such a way as to ensure the best transition from theory to practice. Being located in Rishikesh which is known as the world capital of Yoga, is an added advantage for the Academy, as the environment is conducive for Yoga teaching and practice.

What is a Teaching Practicum in Yoga?

Teaching Practicum is a component in Teacher Training Courses where students practice teaching Yoga Classes. This is one aspect where students are evaluated on the basis of the knowledge they have gained from the course as well as the practical experience they have obtained from teaching.

The teaching practicum will assist students to learn:

  • The confidence to lead a Yoga class
  • How to safely assist practitioners when performing an asana
  • How to provide instructions and demonstrate the asana in a way that is easy to understand.
  • How to provide cues and adjustments for alignment are essential to each asana.
  • How to plan a Yoga class in an effective and balanced manner.
  • It is from this experience that students are able to transit from being yoga practitioners to learn how to be yoga teachers.

Teaching Practice Benefits

1. Create and Instill Self-Esteem

Teaching practicum sessions assist trainees in conquering self-doubt and fears regarding their ability to lead. Most students have a solid personal yoga practice and can demonstrate all of the poses.  That, however, does not equate to the ability to lead a class.  That requires confidence, self-assurance, and the ability to control a room full of students and clients and help them feel confident and skilled as well.

2. Refine and Enhance Your Skills

The clarity of your voice, the ability to lead and give the class a safe way to follow your instructions, and the confidence to adjust and demonstrate poses are all skills that cannot be learned in a text.  These are skills that are refined throughout practice sessions.  Although every one of your students will be at a different level and skill level, that does not offset your responsibility to lead, assist, and adjust throughout every pose.

3.  Skills and Utility of a Structured Class

All teachers are asked to provide classes that are sequenced, and they must have a beginning, middle, and end.  Teaching practice allows trainees to understand the utility and symmetry of classes that follow warm-ups, and at the peak of the class, all of the teaching practice sessions END with a relaxation and cool down.

4. Injury and Safety Improvement

Accurate alignment, injury prevention, and safe correction all require teachers to help their students into safe and correct poses.  The techniques are obtained through teaching practice.

Teaching Practicum at Vinyasa Yoga Academy

Teaching practice is a requirement for the 200 hour and advanced yoga teacher training programs at Vinyasa Yoga Academy, and the academy guarantees that each student will receive individual comments and guidance for their practices.

Practicum Activities Include:

  • Teaching classmates short sequences of yoga
  • Practicing demos and verbal cues
  • Watching classes of experienced teachers
  • Receiving feedback from teachers
  • Learning class engagement and management

These activities help students gain teaching experience and refine their teaching style before leaving the academy.

Supportive Learning Environment

An important aspect of doing the teaching practicum at Vinyasa Yoga Academy is the supportive learning environment that the academy offers. Students teaching classes in front of their peers are done so in small groups so that mistakes are viewed positively.

Drawing on students' teaching challenges and mistakes as learning opportunities, the instructors provide feedback and suggestions on voice, posture, class framing and structure and this mentorship is what fosters the growth of students into capable, confident and professional yoga teachers.

Pertaining to the teaching practicum, the focus is to foster and facilitate the students' growth in the following:

  • Self-efficacy in conducting yoga classes
  • A clear and reinforced understanding of the proper structure and sequencing of yoga classes
  • Heightened and improved verbal and leadership attributes
  • Acquired teaching praxis prior to gaining certification
  • Readiness for yoga teaching and practice in a professional capacity

Once the training is completed, students hold onto teaching yoga classes to students as far as their practice and certification will allow.

As it is known, for each module of study, there will always be that specific study that is assigned the role of an obstacle, and this is what the teaching practicum is to yoga instructor training. The teaching practicum eliminates the paradox of the profession's theory and practice.

At Vinyasa Yoga Academy in Rishikesh, all trainees undergo extensive guided teaching practice, receive developmental teaching critiques, and mentorship from seasoned instructors as a part of their training. This method ascertains that graduates have a mature comprehension of yoga and the self-assurance to disseminate that knowledge.

The teaching practicum is particularly critical for prospective instructors, as it is the last hurdle to crossing to the other side of becoming a fully qualified and motivational yoga teacher.
